Typical Uses

TINCTURE

Use tincture sublingually (under tongue) for best absorption for general, full-body benefits. It may be helpful to start with lowest milligram (mg) CBD amounts, like 500mg, and try only 1 drop at first, and work up from there. Effects may begin in minutes to hours. Using CBD sparingly until you can gauge your body’s sensitivity seems to work best for many. Those who have experienced little, or decreasing, effects have slowly raised the usage to 5 drops, if necessary, and waited to see what benefits occur. It typically seems best to allow at least 24 hours till the next use. Women may be more sensitive to CBD than men. Body weight and size, as well as metabolism of the individual, may also have an impact on effectiveness. Slight drowsiness may occur and ensure a measure of effect.

If there is no change or improvement, another avenue typically taken is to try a higher CBD concentration: 1000mg or 2000mg (you can hand off the lower mg product and make a friend, pay it forward).

For specific joint pain, muscle pain/bruising or inflammation: several drops of tincture can be rubbed into the affected areas of the skin. This application can be repeated as needed.  Topical skin application, logically, appears to focus the CBD in the areas where relief is needed and also tends to provide an effective overall means of absorption into the body.

SALVE

Salve is intended to be used externally only, and is often used for specific joint pain, muscle pain/bruising or inflammation focused in a limited area. Typically, 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of salve is rubbed into the affected area. More may be called for when applying to larger areas of skin. As with tincture, many have found that it is helpful to start with lowest milligram (mg) CBD amounts, like 500mg, and work up from there as you gauge your body's sensitivity. It typically seems best to allow at least 8 hours till the next use.

If there is little change or improvement, an option is to try a higher CBD concentration: 1000mg or 2000mg (you can hand off the lower mg product and make a friend, pay it forward).

FOR PETS

CBD has also been used for large pets (cats, dogs and larger) suffering from pain or anxiety. Amount to use is related to animal size. Tincture drops can be added to treats and food, being very careful not to overuse. Salve and tincture can be rubbed into skin in a problem area. Again start with very small dosage levels and work up. Your pet may show effects by sleeping more soundly.

WHAT IS CBD?

CBD refers to a relatively newly discovered group of complex compounds found in cannabis plants. Recent research has shown the remarkable breadth of possible uses and values of CBD. CBD has found efficacy in and been used to treat epilepsy, pain, arthritis, various forms of cancer (including pancreatic and prostate cancer), nausea, addiction, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and many other mental health challenges (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and autism).

Strong scientific evidence exists that the human body has evolved natural cannabinoid production and receptors that assist in a number of internal functions and biochemical systems, particularly affecting inflammation, which is a known precursor to a host of diseases. The cannabis plant produces dozens of complex molecules with both specific and combined impact to and value in internal function. More research is needed in identifying these causal pathways and interactions. However, efficacy is already being proven, and risk of overdose or side effects at even high concentrations is low. This makes the use of CBD an extremely cost effective treatment.

Good Practices

We at Cann-Do advise each individual to:

  1. Consult their doctor if on medications, or being treated for any problems.

  2. Do your own research, learn and study about the body, your specific issues, because everyone is different, reacts to things differently. Ask questions from others, share information and create learning circles. Check your sources and know that companies may conflate or distort information, journalists may not be scientifically trained and relay on a “two-sides” approach when often issues are complex and knowledge is evolving, and experts may be “siloed,” good at their area of expertise, but lacking in their ability to make connections or bridge fields.

  3. Use CBD supplements or any medication, supplement or active food in conjunction with a holistic approach to health management and well being. Exercise, nutrition, meditation and engagement within social circles and the natural world can have enormous benefits.

• Liver Toxicity

Research from high dosage levels in treatment of childhood epilepsy has shown potential problems with certain populations with liver toxicity, the liver cleans and process blood and excess material not used by cellular or biochemical processes is broken down and purged from the body. This makes sense and cautions us to start with low doses and check efficacy, particularly as the body's receptors may adapt to compounds over time making them less effective.

• Adaptation

Nervous system adaptation/tolerance can develop to active ingredients in CBD products, though there is some evidence to counter this argument: For instance, this adaptation may lead to reduced effectiveness for treatment of pain symptoms over time, and also is part of the reason why many substances become addictive, requiring larger and larger doses to achieve incremental benefits. It’s also why pain treatment systems are beginning to utilize holistic systems that include: nutrition, meditation, physician-approved exercise and other active management protocols.
